A subject I want to discuss in this post is how college should be free for all American citizens. Apart of the American dream is being able to move up the economic social ladder and have a shot at the American wealth and the chance to be in the middle class. When America was founded it was always considered a world power and economic power house. It the land of the supposed free not to mention the millions of slaves and how long it took for them to be free. Looking aside from that what most Americans and immigrant say the United State is were money is made and dreams come true. Over time how the money and wealth is generation has changed indefinitely.
The problem is that is not longer and true and the way people are supposed to get to that dream many Americas have decided college is how you can a job or generate wealth. Colleges and universities do play some role in making people believe that but it is mainly the government and media fault for making that happen and creating this era of college equal opportunity, job, and money. According to author Robert Farrington, Historically, our system relied states covering the vast majority of college costs, and the federal government targeting resources toward those who need additional help financing it. The result was that, up until about 20 years ago, student debt was the exception, not the rule, for those who wanted a bachelor’s degree.”
Also, another author would agree with me Emma Kerr, “ When my father wanted to attend college, he took a job laying bricks to pay for school. But relying on just a summer or part-time job to pay for college today is next to impossible, says Lovett, executive director of Complete Tennessee, a nonprofit advocating for increasing postsecondary access and completion in Tennessee, which was the first state in the country to make community college free statewide. If anyone today wanted to go out and lay bricks and even pay for books that semester, it’s probably not going to happen. And so the realities of what college cost for my father look drastically different than today.”
To hold a degree in today society and especially in America means a lot but it come with such a high cost that can out way the benefits. It is hard for people to find job and the student debt plus interest add up college’s way the way for many of our parent and grandparents they got to become lawyers, doctors, academics, nurses, business owners, entrepreneurs, and philanthropist. This generation deserves be able to go to colleges and have the same access and opportunity and move up America socioeconomic ladder.
